What Is Whiplash?
Whiplash is a common, soft-tissue injury many people suffer from. Commonly associated with car accidents, especially rear-end collisions, whiplash can also result from a variety of traumatic injuries, and often plagues athletes. The neck pain and strain associated with whiplash can be difficult to live with and can have a debilitating impact on your life. With proper treatment, you can recover from whiplash, but those who neglect to seek treatment suffer much longer than necessary.
Whiplash symptoms include:
- Neck pain
- Stiffness
- Difficulty moving the neck
- Increased pain with movement
- Headaches
- Pain in the shoulders and upper back
If you suffer from whiplash, or have been in an accident that has affected your neck and upper back, it’s important to consult a whiplash expert. At Texas Injury Doctors, we offer free consultations, and you will receive experienced care from the best chiropractors in Houston.
How Long Does Whiplash Last?
The severity and duration of whiplash pain will vary depending on the force of the crash and the extent of the damage to the affected soft tissue. In most cases, however, whiplash symptoms tend to last anywhere from a few days to as long as three months following a crash. Pain may continue to linger outside of this timeframe if:
- You experience severe pain immediately after the crash
- You have additional neurological symptoms such as memory loss
- Your pain extends to your arm or fingers
How Is Whiplash Treated?
Whiplash is commonly treated with anti-inflammatory medications and/or muscle relaxers, as well as hot and cold therapy. Chiropractic and physical therapies are generally recommended early following your injury to help you regain your range of motion quickly.
With your doctor's permission, performing the following exercises three to four times per day can help to alleviate whiplash pain:
- Rotate your neck slowly from side to side, stretching your muscles but not causing pain
- Tilt your head from side to side, mimicking as if you were holding a phone between your head and shoulder
- Move your neck forward toward your chest, and then backward
- Roll your shoulders in circles
